Concrete Patio Ideas That Actually Fit Georgia Backyards

April 18, 2026 Hawk Concrete LLC

The most common regret we hear about a patio is not the color or the finish — it is the size. People pour a 10x12 slab, put a table on it, and discover there is nowhere left to walk. Before you commit to dimensions, put your actual furniture out on the grass and mark around it.

Rough guidelines: a four-person dining set needs about 12x12 to leave room to pull chairs out. Add a grill station and you want 14 feet of depth. A seating area with a fire pit wants 16x16 or more so nobody is sitting in the traffic path. It is far cheaper to pour the size you want now than to add on later and live with a seam.

Pitch it away from the house. Every patio needs fall — roughly a quarter inch per foot — running away from your foundation. This is not optional in Georgia. A patio that drains back toward the house sends water against your foundation every time it rains, and that is a much bigger problem than a patio.

Pick the finish for the conditions. Broom finish is the default because it gives you traction when wet, which matters if the patio is near a pool or gets shaded and stays damp. Smooth trowel finish looks sharper and is a good choice under a covered porch where it stays dry. Exposed aggregate splits the difference — texture and grip with more visual character.

Think about joints as a design element. Control joints have to be there, so you may as well place them deliberately. A saw-cut grid, a diagonal pattern, or a border band can make a plain gray slab look intentional at no extra material cost.

Plan the tie-ins. If your patio meets an existing walkway, a pool deck, or a set of steps, those transitions are what make it look finished or make it look patched. We form and pour so the seam falls on a joint line and the elevations match.
