When a slab fails early, the concrete itself is almost never the problem. Ready-mix from a reputable plant is consistent. What fails is what was under it and what was inside it — and both are invisible the moment the pour is finished.
The base carries the load, not the concrete. Concrete is strong in compression and weak in tension. It only performs if it is fully supported from below. Pour a slab on soft or uneven ground and it will span the low spots, flex, and crack — exactly the way a board bridging a gap snaps under weight.
Georgia clay makes this worse. Red clay expands when it gets wet and shrinks when it dries. That cycle moves whatever is sitting on top of it. The fix is to excavate to depth, replace the top of the sub-grade with graded stone, and compact it in lifts. Compacted stone drains, and it does not swell.
Reinforcement does not stop cracks — it holds them closed. Every slab will eventually crack somewhere. The question is whether the two sides stay locked together and level, or whether one side lifts and turns into a trip hazard. Steel is what keeps the pieces working as one slab.
Rebar beats wire mesh for anything that carries weight. Mesh is cheaper and it does help, but it is thin and easy to step flat into the bottom of the pour, where it does nothing. Rebar tied on chairs sits in the middle third of the slab where it belongs and stays there while the concrete is placed.
Control joints finish the job. Cut on a proper grid — generally in feet, no more than about two and a half times the slab thickness in inches — joints give the slab a weak line to crack along. Cut them too late or space them too far apart and the concrete picks its own line.
None of this is exotic. It is just work that takes time, and it is the first thing cut when a bid comes in suspiciously low. If you are comparing quotes, ask each contractor exactly how deep they are excavating, what base material they are using, whether it gets compacted, and whether they are using mesh or rebar. The answers will tell you a lot.
